Forest of Bowland

The Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales boasts outstanding scenery, a range of wildlife habitats, all in all a rich cultural heritage and tranquility. Designated a national park in recognition of these most important qualities.

The Dales lie astride the Pennines in the north of England spanning the counties of North Yorkshire and Cumbria There are a large number of main dales, differing greatly from each other in character and atmosphere. The south dales area is more densely populated than the North which stretches up to the Tees and beyond, its relatively small population live in the scattered farms, villages and small market towns of the Dales.

People have lived in the area since pre-historic times and left an indelible mark on the landscape. The features include ancient settlements and mine workings, a network of dry stone walls and agricultural barns which are so typical of the Dales area. Early agricultural work cleared the woodlands, developed the fields many of which now have a network of paths.

Each of the Yorkshire Dales has a different character. The Southern Dales are less remote, and attract day visitors as well as staying guests. The Northern Dales provide rugged scenery for walking and sightseeing. In the West, the villages and small towns have their own charm. Throughout the Dales there is a variety of accommodation and attractions which can keep any visitor fully engaged.

The Yorkshire Dales is well worth a visit at any time of year curl up in The Homestead with an open fire and a glass of your favourite tipple in the winter months, or for a spring break with a touch of luxury, or great for an autumn weekend. Whenever you stay you will find a fascinating landscape with a huge variety of things to see and do.

The Lake District

Cumbria and the Lake District is a perfect destination. For its sheer scenic majesty and diversity few places in England can measure up to the beautiful Lake District, visit Wordsworth country where Wordsworth, Coleridge and their Romantic compatriots famously sought their poetic muse in the 19th century. The lakes landscape is as breathtaking as any you’ll find in Switzerland or the French Alps, a panorama of mountains, craggs, scree-covered hillsides, mountainous tarns and some of the largest natural lakes anywhere in England.

With such a wealth of natural riches, it’s hardly surprising that the Lake District is one of the country’s favourite places for savouring the great outdoors, but there’s much more to this region than fine views – it’s also packed with history and culture, from the abandoned slate mines around Honister and the ruined abbey of Furness to the literary landmarks of Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount, both former homes of one William Wordsworth as well as the world famous Beatrix Potter museum near to Windermere.
